Zakiyah Shani, your new fave MUA
Glossy, beautiful, glowy skinwork and perfectly sculpted faces that don’t look OVERDONE? Yes, that’s Zakiyah’s aesthetic. Wanna know more about her story? We interviewed the London-based MUA who is originally from the Bristol via Jamaica.
Introduce yourself for those who don’t know you, who are you and what do you do?
Hey, My name is Zakiyah Shani and I’m a 21 year old make up artist in London, originally from Bristol.
How did you get started as a makeup artist, who and what inspired you?
I’ve been doing freelance make up, part time since I was 16 and it’s now my full time 5 years on. Growing up I was obsessed with models and make up. I’d always watch shows like America’s Next Top Model or I’d analyse the make up of black actresses/artists and loved how beautiful and transformative it could be. Having the power to enhance and create was what inspired me most.
Is makeup something that you’ve always wanted to do?
I’ve always loved make up, but I became more passionate about it during college. I started dancing at age 7 and that was always my biggest passion and what I thought I’d be doing. I still love it, but make up has taken more of a forefront in the last 2 years.
What would you say is the best part of being an MUA?
Being able to create looks on different skin tones and skin types, using colours and techniques to enhance and transform. I love seeing the before and after, not just in the make up but how a persons energy and confidence can dramatically change. It’s like a super power.
And what about the worst part?
Cleaning make up brushes every other day! It’s definitely the most jarring part of it all for me.
You have PERFECT skin, can you talk us through your regimen, what do you do and what do you use?
Thank you! I’ve only recently started a skin care regimen. I use the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser for normal to oily skin, and I moisturise with the La Roche-Posay Nutritic Intense Riche everyday. I exfoliate 2/3 times a week with the L’Oréal Smooth Sugars glow scrub.
3 makeup products that you love to use!
My 3 favourite products are Chestnut Lip pencil from MAC, I wear it with almost every lip combo. Fix + from MAC also because I love how glowy and smooth it makes my make up look. And any Nude Lipgloss.
Where would you like to be in 5 years and how can we (RONIEBOND community) help you get there?
I’d like to have my own successful make up studio either based in London or LA and a line of staple products that I love and represent me as a make up artist. I’d also like to have the luxury of constantly being able to travel around the world for clients and work.
The RONIEBOND community can help by continuing to give artists and creatives like myself a platform to present themselves and their work, spreading the word and shouting about it. Girls supporting girls is everything and I’m very grateful for the support of the RONIEBOND community.
