We spoke to Naomi Richardson, the boss behind GirlGangCyphers about the new platform built to showcase female talent. Read more about putting the girlsdem on the map below!
We have created a positive environment where young talented women are supported and promoted, with women being at the forefront rather than the sideline.
What is GirlGangCyphers?
Girl Gang is series of all female cyphers, free-styles and live shows showcasing female artists; singers and rappers alike. The concept of the movement was inspired by the lack of representation females were receiving in the music industry. We have created a positive environment where young talented women are supported and promoted, with women being at the forefront rather than the sideline. Girl Gang is all about empowering and unifying talented women and bringing them together to showcase their gifts whilst having fun in a positive and productive way.
The cyphers are our bread and butter but they’re not your typical cypher, we have singers and rappers who feature in a cypher. With our cyphers I style everyone in pink and lilac – those are our gang colours by the way. And Now we have Girl Gang free-styles which essentially means the artist is free to do their style of music, this showcases the individual talent of the artist. We started this so we will have a lot more content to put across our channels you can check out some of our cyphers and free-styles on YouTube @girlgangcyphers.
What inspired you to start?
I used to co-host a radio show with Shayna- Marie (who is our GGC DJ) and never really had much female guests on our show and we weren’t really aware of the females who were doing their thing musically and just the lack of representation females were receiving in the music industry. I thought why not do a female cypher and then the idea just developed into creating a platform just for females and then we started to do events and the rest is history.
What’s the big vision with the platform?
Ive got some cool shit up my sleeve but soon all will be revealed !! So keep your eyes peeled…
What advice would you give to other young hustlers starting a project?
I would say stay motivated keep pushing and be consistent don’t ever let the work rate drop at any point. And make sure you have the right people around you !
What’s been the hardest part of your journey so far?
Dealing with imitations lol you won’t believe how many people have now started similar ‘platforms’ / events etc but we are the originators!
How can we help/support/get involved.
Coming to our events// sharing our work// referring new talent all help is appreciated. And any way we can help or get involved with any of your projects etc just let us know we’re all for helping the gyaldem. That goes to other female creatives out there I’m always looking to collaborate and create magic!!
